Our very own Dr Ravi Jain shared his skills and experience with Dr Mekle and his team at the Mek Medical Centre in Katowice, Poland last weekend!

As part of his work as a VASER liposelection trainer, Dr Jain flew over and spent 2 days teaching the team the principles of VASER. Having used Smartlipo MPX and traditional liposuction methods in the past, Dr Mekle was thrilled with the results of the VASER training, and eager to put them into practice.

Dr Mekle said:

It was great to have had you here. The VASER was good too but you made the training feel like a meeting of old friends. Your expert & professional approach to aesthetic surgery made us feel that the VASER is the only solution for lipolysis. It was also personally comforting to be able …to relate to someone who also understands the relentless hours spent to fulfill a dream….

By the end of the training Dr Mekle had developed excellent VASER skills and it was concluded the training was a complete success!

A few pictures below of the team in action:

There’s nothing like the feeling of nuzzling up to your baby – soft skin, sweet smell, and those little gurgly sounds that only a newborn can make. It’s the best thing about having a baby, don’t you think?

But where there’s a best, there’s a worst- thin hair, hormonal changes bringing spots, and the dreaded stretch marks!

Some women are really lucky – they get through pregnancy and birth and their skin just pings back into shape. The majority, however, will be left with stretch marks, and they can be confidence destroying.

But you can get rid of them – with Dermaroller Microneedling from Riverbanks Clinic!

Dermaroller Microneedling

Dermaroller treatments use micro-medical skin-needling to roll away the imperfections and stimulate your own collagen to regenerate and repair your skin naturally.

Compared with other similar treatments you’ll experience only slight redness on the first day and then your skin is back to normal, so there’s no need to take time out for recovery; downtime is at a minimum. Ideally, the treatment is over three thirty minute sessions, but your initial consultation will establish exactly what your particular skin condition requires.

See some fantastic stretch mark before and after pictures below:

So if you’re a new mum and want to get rid of your stretch marks, all you need to do is to make an appointment with Dr Jain and you’ll be on the way to a smoother, brighter and clearer skin.

Last week I was privileged to be invited to attend a global experts meeting in Miami for a leading dermal filler company. Being the only UK doctor, I was quite apprehensive as the delegate list included doctors whose work I have admired and whose research has paved the way forward for the aesthetic speciality. The meeting was extremely educational on numerous levels and I felt I was able to contribute effectively on several topics.

However I was awestruck by the amount of research each of the American doctors had carried out to help advance our knowledge. The US Food & Drugs Administration (FDA) comes under a lot of criticism there, like the Care Quality Commission has done here in the UK, but what the FDA does create, is a culture to provide good evidence based medicine, more akin to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) here in the UK.

In the US, the doctors strive to have work published in the peer-reviewed medical journals, and to have recognition from their colleagues from around the world. This culture is in stark contrast to how the British cosmetic doctors practice. Here, the most ‘visible’ doctors are just that. The ‘journals’ which they strive to be in are the consumer glossies, rather than the respected peer-review journals. This practice, goes all the way to the top of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD) where highly experimental treatments are lauded in the consumer press before they have been established medically, all carefully planned to drive more business.

This is so wrong.

We are doctors, and if our ‘leaders’ don’t practice with ethics and have no desire to prove their latest claims then how can they be a good representation for us? The BACD should, in my opinion, be encouraging its members to lead the field in research rather than focussing on public relations to the consumer press.

We all treat hundreds if not thousands of patients each year so we all have the resources to collect data and develop some research. Research would provide both doctors and patients guidance on which treatments are effective, as well as keep newer treatments under appropriate scrutiny. So instead of striving for publication in “The Daily Mail” surely we should aim for the likes of “The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology” or “The Journal of Dermatological Surgery”. Any publication in these journals would prove much more credible for all involved providing security in true data rather than glory of the sometimes tainted press.

As I result, I have started several research projects and hope to present this data next year.

For more details, Dr Ravi Jain can be contacted on 01582 762 877, www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk & info@riverbanksclinic.co.uk

Following reports that the first UK patient has undergone cell enriched breast enhancement, a leading cosmetic doctor is urging patients to think twice before rushing to book the treatment in 2010 because there is not enough data to prove its long-term success.

The procedure, also known as a Stem Cell Boob Job, involves taking cells and fat from the patient’s body, such as buttocks or thighs, and injecting it into the breast to increase their size. The chemical-free treatment claims to be permanent and requires no top up sessions. On paper it seems like the perfect treatment, but cosmetic expert Dr Ravi Jain is advising patients to wait for more data to become available before deciding whether or not to have what is being billed as the latest cutting-edge cosmetic treatment.

“Almost all of the best cosmetic treatments currently available are actually 3rd or 4th generation versions of earlier treatments which have been refined and improved over time and as more data became available. Stem cell-based beauty treatments are certainly going to be big in the future but the treatment is still in its infancy, and in my opinion, has at least another 12-18 months of modification ahead of it,” says Dr Jain.

Some UK clinics are already offering stem cell boob jobs and even ‘stem cell botox’, but Dr Jain’s own clinic, the multi-award winning Riverbanks (www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk) will only be offering specially selected trials of the revolutionary treatment in 2010 in order to gather sufficient data to be able to assess the longer term success of the treatment.

“Stem Cell Therapy is a very exciting area as it essentially means we can partially regenerate new skin cells without using any chemicals. This potentially reduces the risk of adverse reactions and increases the likelihood of more natural and longer lasting results for patients. If trials prove successful, this approach could be used to treat a range of conditions more effectively including sun damage, scars, skin tone and lines and wrinkles. This is definitely going to be the future of cosmetic treatments, but still has some way to go. My advice to patients is to ‘watch this space’.”

ENDS

Dr Jain is available for press interviews.

A lot of people search the internet for a particular technology which they feel will suit their needs. Sometimes a product will have bad press and this may put people off it. I have received numerous questions through the Ask Dr Jain a question section, and a lot of them are about using Pixel for acne scarring. They have often been along the lines of…

“I have had 4 sessions of pixel and my scars are no better…. why is that?”

Obviously it is hard to comment accurately without full details of the treatment and history, but its my guess that the treatment protocols used were inadequate. Let me explain…

Pixel has been around for about 2-3 years now and uses fractional laser technology to effectively resurface the skin, and is used for acne scarring as well as skin rejuvenation among other uses. Like with most technologies, when they first emerged, the protocols were very conservative, and therefore patients were less impressed with the results. However, over the last 2 years, good doctors have developed the protocols in their own clinics which have started to deliver excellent results for the patient.

I have used Pixel in London for 2 years now and with the current protocols, results are good, particularly with acne scarring. These protocols have been painstakingly developed through communication between like-minded doctors (British Association of Cosmetic Doctors) who treat cosmetic medicine as any other speciality and are constantly trying to advance our knowledge, understanding and treatments, all for the benefit of our patients.

So you may ask, why do I not offer Pixel at Riverbanks Clinic? Since Pixel, along with advancing protocols, there has been advances in laser technology too. The CO2 laser has always been the most effective resurfacing laser in the world, but because of its severe effects, has been restricted to surgical use only and brave people who were prepared for several weeks of healing. Modern techniques allow the SmartXide DOT laser to use a fractional CO2 laser which has very similar effects to normal ablative lasers, but the strength can be taoilored to suit a patients needs and how much time they are prepared to look red for! Most treatments cause between 2-3 days of redness, but stronger ones can take 10-14 days to recover from, with the benefit of faster results. Its all down to you!

I use Pixel for Courthouse Clinics on Wimpole Street on Tuesdays and Smartxide at Riverbanks Clinc the rest of the week.

So, please do remember that just because a clinic offers a certain technology do not assume that they are skilled to get the best results out of it! Its what you do with it that counts!
