Dr Ravi Jain and his team at Riverbanks are glowing – and it’s not because they’ve had one of the fantastic skin treatments that they offer their patients!  They’ve just been voted the Best Clinic in the UK in the national Aesthetic Awards and also picked up an award for Best Customer Service – out of 4,500 entries!

One of the UK’s leading Hair Loss treatment brands behind both ‘Nourkrin’ and ‘Viviscal’ of which we see major advertising and endorsement by celebrities with their ‘Men’ and ‘Women’ products has had its supplement advert banned for misleading customers. Viviscal was said to contain ‘the nutrients needed for healthy hair’ in national press promotions however claims that it could ‘nourish hair follicles’ and keep hair in ‘optimum health’ had not been proved said the Advertising Standards Authority.

This is not the first time that claims by certain Hair Loss products have been disputed. A few years back Advanced Hair Studios with their laser treatments also hit the press….

Viewers were misled by adverts for an anti-hair loss laser treatment, featuring sports stars, the Advertising Standards Authority has ruled. The watchdog said Advanced Hair Studio had failed to prove that its infrared radiation treatment was effective. Ex-England cricketer Graham Gooch and former England rugby player Austin Healey appeared in the commercials.

Advanced Hair Studio said “tens of thousands of people” across the world had benefited from its treatments. After investigating two viewers’ complaints, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the therapy’s effectiveness had not been proved. One advert showed Healey with his head in a laser device saying he had re-grown his hair with Advanced Hair Studio’s laser hair therapy programme.

Members of the public were shown backing the treatment, saying “after a few months I stopped losing my hair” and “my hair loss has now stopped completely”.

However, an expert told the industry watchdog it was not accepted that infrared radiation could reverse male or female hair loss. He drew attention to “serious flaws” in a study provided by the advertiser to support its claims and the commercials did not make it clear that continuous treatment was needed to maintain any benefits gained from the hair loss therapy, the ASA added.

The ASA concluded: “We were concerned viewers would be misled into thinking the advertiser offered a treatment that was more effective than it actually was.”

Another series of Dancing on Ice is over, and another celebrity and professional skating duo are crowned this year’s champions. But really, the most interesting revelation to come out of this year’s series is not the winner or any behind-the-scenes ‘are they, aren’t they’ rumours, but in fact Jason Gardiner’s recently debuted full head of hair.

It seems quite fitting that a man whose professional career is based purely on analysing and criticising the aesthetics of other men and women, that this year it is he who in fact has chosen to improve his appearance with the aid of a hair transplant.

Whilst many women have bums, tums and thighs to worry about, men’s main problematic zone is their hair. In recent months, we have seen a string of male celebs reveal a new head of locks, with Jason Gardiner revealing he too has had a hair transplant over the last few months.

Jason chose to have his hair transplant done abroad across the pond in America, but he needn’t have travelled so far to receive treatment. At Riverbanks Clinic, men are getting treated for hair loss problems such as male pattern baldness through a simple yet effected surgical hair transplant procedure. The procedure, which involves taking hair follicles from the back of the head and re-planting them in thinning or bald areas, is a permanent solution, which will mean maybe we can say goodbye to Jason’s large collection of rather ugly hats! Although if he had come to us, it certainly wouldn’t have cost the reputed £20 -60,000 (depending on what you read) so he would have had plenty of money left over to indulge his dodgy hat fetish!

Although Jason is so far happy with the procedure, he has admitted to wanting a second operation to complete his new-found head of hair, remarking on Twitter how “…The medical technology these days is just remarkable!” Whilst Jason needn’t have gone abroad to have the hair transplant, it is great to see someone of celebrity status be open and honest about this rather sensitive issue.

Despite the financial pressures brought about by the recession, it seems that patients are still keen to keep up their beauty regime with regular doses of Botox as a top UK clinic reveals it was the most popular treatment of 2009.

Bookings for Botox-type treatments including Azzalure® and Botox® were up 43% compared to 2008 at the multi-award winning Riverbanks Clinic in Harpenden, with other common treatments such as Fillers, used to treat fine lines in the face increasing by 11% as well as the demand for Skin Care prescriptions rising by 26%.

Dr Jain, Medical Director at Riverbanks Clinic believes that their latest figures reflect a rising trend and a new breed of patient who puts skin health as their top priority, recognising that a less invasive but more frequent maintenance programme of treatments can provide much better, long term results.

“Many patients are now beginning to see the real benefits of combining good skin care with regular maintenance treatments for creating a long lasting, natural and radiant appearance. All work in the same way, by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscle and each surgeon tends to have their preferred brands of Botox.

However, Dr Jain is keen to remind people looking to invest in cosmetic treatments in 2010 that beauty isn’t just skin deep, but requires improvements in other areas too such as from maintaining a health diet and exercising regularly to really maximise results. According to the multi-award winning specialist, the two most important beauty tips for achieving soft, supple and revitalised skin are usually the ones that are forgotten by the majority of patients.

“Botox and Fillers can only go so far and patients must always remember to keep hydrated if they want to achieve the very best from their treatments and skin care routines. Many are surprised to learn that the skin requires more hydration in the winter because the combination of indoor heating and cold weather can dry out the skin. Also, everyone should be wearing sun cream everyday, both in winter and the summer, a minimum of SPF30 should be worn come rain or shine, even in the snow, to prevent harmful rays from damaging the skin’s surface. The less damaged the skin is, the less work we need to do,” says Dr Jain.

Following reports that the first UK patient has undergone cell enriched breast enhancement, a leading cosmetic doctor is urging patients to think twice before rushing to book the treatment in 2010 because there is not enough data to prove its long-term success.

The procedure, also known as a Stem Cell Boob Job, involves taking cells and fat from the patient’s body, such as buttocks or thighs, and injecting it into the breast to increase their size. The chemical-free treatment claims to be permanent and requires no top up sessions. On paper it seems like the perfect treatment, but cosmetic expert Dr Ravi Jain is advising patients to wait for more data to become available before deciding whether or not to have what is being billed as the latest cutting-edge cosmetic treatment.

“Almost all of the best cosmetic treatments currently available are actually 3rd or 4th generation versions of earlier treatments which have been refined and improved over time and as more data became available. Stem cell-based beauty treatments are certainly going to be big in the future but the treatment is still in its infancy, and in my opinion, has at least another 12-18 months of modification ahead of it,” says Dr Jain.

Some UK clinics are already offering stem cell boob jobs and even ‘stem cell botox’, but Dr Jain’s own clinic, the multi-award winning Riverbanks (www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk) will only be offering specially selected trials of the revolutionary treatment in 2010 in order to gather sufficient data to be able to assess the longer term success of the treatment.

“Stem Cell Therapy is a very exciting area as it essentially means we can partially regenerate new skin cells without using any chemicals. This potentially reduces the risk of adverse reactions and increases the likelihood of more natural and longer lasting results for patients. If trials prove successful, this approach could be used to treat a range of conditions more effectively including sun damage, scars, skin tone and lines and wrinkles.
