Cosmetic Fillers Scandal in UK – Dr Jain’s view

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Monday, 09 January 2012 23:21 PM

‘Injectables should only come from doctors or nurses – not hairdressers’

One of the UK’s top cosmetic doctors, based near Harpenden, is today joining nationwide calls for the regulation of cosmetic fillers and other injectable substances such as Botox.

Dr Ravi Jain of RiverBanks Clinic (www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk) between Harpenden and Luton, says that following the PIP breast implants scandal, the next area needing tighter regulation is the use of injectable fillers and wrinkle smoothers that are now being offered by everyone from hairdressers and dentists to beauticians and salon staff:

“My message is that regulation of these incredibly popular cosmetic procedures is long overdue. Patients should know that if they are looking for this type of anti-ageing treatment that the people offering injections are fully trained doctors or nurses – not hairdressers or beauticians.

“As a fully trained doctor I think it’s a scandal that this sector of the industry is left wide open to cowboys and unscrupulous operators who offer bargain prices but with no guarantee of trained staff, safety or high-quality, long-term results.

SEVEN DAY CLEANSE – DAY 1

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Wednesday, 04 January 2012 14:37 PM

For the first six months after my six pack surgery, I really was motivated with my new diet. My personal trainer identified that my metabolism couldn’t cope with most gluten food stuffs and that if I did eat these foods, they would be converted to fats and stored on my body. Weekly caliper measurements from all over my body were taken for 6 months and while I was good and avoided the Hi GI goods, my caliper readings fell and my muscle definition improved. However, after 6 months I started to get a little bit relaxed and slowly cheated a little bit more each week!

As a result, despite the intensive training at the gym, and still being on a completely different diet to before, my definition faded and my weight crept up and my caliper measurements increased. The lowest I got my body fat percentage to was 14% back in July. Thanks to Christmas, today my body fat has soared up to 23% !!!

How common are droopy eyelids after botox?

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Monday, 21 November 2011 10:00 AM

I always explain to my patients the potential side effects following a treatment with a botulinum toxin prescription around the eyes and forehead. Thankfully serious complications are almost unheard of. However, there are what I call ‘cosmetic’ complications which would bother a patient but not put their health at risk.

The 4 most common ‘cosmetic complications’ people ask about are:

1. Droopy Eyelids

2. Heavy Brows

3. Mr Spock Eyebrows

4. Tightness & Frozen expression

DROOPY EYELIDS

Droopy eyelids on the left

These are thankfully very rare despite the press always going on about it. This occurs when some of the Btx drifts to the upper eyelid muscle by mistake. It is not normal to be injected directly into the eyelid muscle for treating forehead frownlines. If some Btx does drift to this muscle it will weaken it and so create a lazy eyelid. Thankfully this can be remedied in most cases with some simple eye drops available from your doctor. The side effects will settle within a couple of weeks or so usually and thereafter you will enjoy the expected benefits of your treatment.

Who’s the best Botox Doctor in London?

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Sunday, 20 November 2011 19:46 PM

This is a very very difficult question to answer as there are so many good ones around. We would always encourage you to ask your friends if they have heard of a good doctor who regularly gives great results and is a good, caring doctor too. Word of mouth really is the most reliable way of finding good people, in any walk of life and its no different with Botox doctors.

Vaser Lipo vs Body-Jet – what’s better?

Dr Robert Troell from California recently published his study comparing the different types of liposuction he has performed in his practice with interesting results. This study carries significant credibility because Dr Troell has been a national trainer in both Vaser and Body-Jet techniques in the USA and so offers an unbiased view.

In this 150 patient study, Dr Troell compared traditional liposuction (Suction-assisted-liposuction) to Ultrasound-assisted-liposuction (VASER) to Water-assisted-lipouction (Bodyjet). He produced  this study to help both physicians and patients in choosing the right treatment.

Here is a summary of the results:

  • VASER resulted in greatest amount of fat removal and highest patient satisfaction
  • Bodyjet required about twice as much fluid as two other techniques
  • VASER and Bodyjet use less traumatic methods to remove fat than simple suction power

This study confirms what we at Riverbanks have always known:

VASER LIPOSELECTION OFFERS THE HIGHEST PATIENT SATISFACTION

Whats the difference between Vaser Hi Def & Vaser 4D ?

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Friday, 18 November 2011 21:08 PM

There is no denying that the VASER Hi-Def technique was one of the most influential body contouring procedures in the last decade. However, even earthshakers have their flaws. And as Dr. Hoyos worked more and more with Hi-Def, he realized the multiple flaws the procedure presented.

That is why he went back to the drawing board, re-imagined his creation, and has now released 4D Sculpt™.

The differences between 4D Sculpt™ and Hi-Def may be subtle, but when applied in the operating room, the nuances are distinctly profound. 4D Sculpt™ means the difference between clunky sculpture and natural human beauty.

Here is an in-depth explanation of the differences between VASER Hi-Def and Dr. Hoyos’ highly improved 4D Sculpt™.

1. VASER Hi-Def Ignores the Body in Motion.

Coined by Dr. Hoyos as the “Pinocchio problem,” VASER Hi-Def results often do not show the muscles in motion. It does not incorporate the natural progression of the body in motion.

Dietary recommendations after your VASER surgery

Dietary Recommendations following your Vaser surgery

Vaser liposelection will have removed a significant amount of your fat cells from your body especially from those stubborn areas. However, it is important to realise that you do need to look after your new body in order to maximise the results of your surgery.

Many of our patients have commented that they have found it easier to lose weight following VASER than before. As a result their motivation to diet and exercise is maintained for longer and so they achieve better results.

Some people are very resistant to weight loss if they eat starchy food such as breads, rices, pastas, potatoes, milk, chocolates & sweets.

Following my own surgery I adopted a low GI diet together with some other lifestyle changes which led to dramatic weight loss and also improved physique.

DIET

For the next 3 weeks, try to avoid the following ingredients for 6 days of every week:

Not All Calories Are Created Equal

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Tuesday, 13 September 2011 10:27 AM

A big new study showed that over 4 years, increased amounts of different foods led to different outcomes on the scale.

For example:

Nuts vs Chips

Nuts take longer to chew. They contain fat and fibre that needs more time to digest. As a result your stomach stays fuller and you feel satisfied for longer meaning you eat less at your next meal. YOU LOSE 0.26KG

Chips are made of cooked starch and is quickly broken down which causes a spike in sugar blood levels. This causes the body to release insulin which creates hunger signals and so you eat more at your next meal. YOU GAIN 1.52KG

Why can’t I lose any weight?

Posted by RaviJain Posted Date: Monday, 11 July 2011 21:47 PM

ADDICTION TO CARBOHYDRATES AND GLUTEN OFTEN UNDERLIES EXCESS WEIGHT AND OBESITY

As many as 75% of overweight and obese people in the UK may be addicted through poor eating habits to either carbohydrates or the protein called gluten, which is found in all wheat, rye, barley and oat products.

Like any addiction, these cravings are unhealthy and problematic. They take the form of either an irresistible craving for carbohydrate-rich foods such as desserts, candies and junk food, or gluten products like breakfast cereals, breads and pasta.

Carbohydrate-rich foods make up a large part of the modern-day diet and include bagels, cakes, chocolate, cookies, crackers, pastry, fruit and fruit juice, ice cream, potato chips, potatoes, pretzels, rice, pie, popcorn and sugar-sweetened beverages. In addition, carbohydrate “act-a-likes” such as sugar substitutes, alcoholic beverages and monosodium glutamate may trigger intense, recurring carbohydrate cravings, which can lead to excess weight and obesity.
